The town makes regular cameos on the hit TV series “Inspector Montalbano” and tourists can visit two of the show’s sets inside Palazzo Municipio. The villa is also a few kilometers from Modica: after the 1963 earthquake, the city was so damaged that it was largely rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style.
After the 1963 earthquake, Ragusa was so damaged that a new town was built on a high plateau to the west. Many buildings in the old town were repaired and rebuilt, however, so both towns show a marked Baroque influence that characterizes its tourist attractions today. Like the newer town above, the Old Town of Ragusa, a quiet quarter of narrow streets known as Ragusa Ibla, was also largely rebuilt in the Baroque style after the 1963 earthquake, so you will see examples of 18th-century architecture scattered among other buildings that survived before the earthquake.
