The coastal stretch south of Olbia has rapidly grown from a wilderness of rock and scrub to become a favorite with Italians and other holiday-makers who throng the area’s beaches every summer.

The pink and coral-colored constructions that have sprouted haphazardly in the last couple of decades have blighted much of the landscape, though the seaward view remains unaltered, dominated by the looming profiles of the islands of Tavolara and Molara. The biggest center on the coast south of Olbia, Porto San Paolo is a modern settlement that is pretty dull for most of the year but attracts a lively crowd of holiday-makers in summer.

There is a sandy beach here but the best ones are just a short distance to either side. A couple of kilometers north, Porto Istana is a sandy bay with calm waters sheltered by the hulking form of Tavolara, with sun loungers to rent and a bar open in summer. From here, it is an easy excursion to Capo Ceraso, the southern tip of the Golfo di Olbia, where you will find more good beaches among the thick growth of Mediterranean scrub and pink rocks.

Three kilometers south of Porto San Paolo, there is a good swimming at Porto Taverna, but more seclusion on Capo Coda Cavallo, which enjoys spectacular views across to Molara. Rising sheer above the flat coast east of Olbia, the islands of Tavolara and Molara make rewarding destinations for a day-trip from Porto San Paolo. Boat excursions combine close-up views of these tall eruptions of rock with opportunities to swim in crystal-clear waters from one of the string of beaches around their sides.

A kilometer or two beyond Sa Testa on the Golfo Aranci road, you can cool down with a swim at one of Olbia’s favorite bathing spots, Pittulongu. The three beaches that make up the resort look across the bay to the island of Tavolara, and are lined with facilities for renting sun loungers and parasols in summer. Built in the 1963 in the wake of the Costa Smeralda’s development, Porto Rotondo’s rows of orange villas snake remorselessly over the scrub-covered hills.

Chic boutiques and fashion shops set the tone in central Piazzetta San Marco, from which a wide stairway leads up to the modern granite church of San Lorenzo. A few meters away, there is a modern open-air theater, also granite, where entertainments are staged in summer. But the best feature of the place is the proximity of a number of beaches. On Punta della Volpe, the thin headland north of Porto Rotondo, try Spiaggia Sassi and Cugnana.

Offering a peaceful atmosphere, the villa also features a generous patio with a large dining area and lounge area for relaxing and socializing. With gorgeous views of the sea, the garden is the perfect retreat to sunbathe or just sip a cocktail. Please note that the pool is open from the beginning of May to the beginning of October.
